Forgotten Artist of the Grammys

MSN had a feature of twenty or so artists that have been ignored by the Grammy Awards.
Artists such as Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Who, The Stones, Hendrix, Queen. I didn’t find this unusual.
In my days (the old days). Rock/Pop music was ignored on those kind of awards. The Grammy’s were reserved for mainstream music. The only awards those above could hope to achieve was in the eyes of their adoring fans or eventually The Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame. Of course, it wasn’t around before some of the above had passed. The two names that I found surprising [...]

Julio Iglesias & Dolly Parton – When You Tell Me That You Love Me

“When you tell me that you love me” is not a new song, but who said only new ones are good? It was initially released by Diana Ross in 1991, but many artists sang the song too. One of them is Julio Iglesias. And I find the way he sings it in a duet with Dolly Parton very beautiful. This is one of the songs I can listen to again and again and always sing along to. Sorry, several first seconds of the music video were lost. Unfortunately, I can share only this video. You can still enjoy it.

Symphony

All Aboard the Meme Express – Thursday, November 20, 2008 On November 20, 1965, Diana Ross and the Supremes hit the top of the popular music charts with their hit single, “I Hear a Symphony.” Here it is: . . Today, the Meme Express prompt is “symphony.” Do you like classical music? Who is your favorite composer? Have you ever been to a symphony concert? Do you play a musical instrument? Have you ever played in an orchestra? What is your favorite genre of

Episode 4151 - R.A.P.S. (Awesome!)

It’s nice to take a break from the barrage of “Colbert Christmas” promotion to simply enjoy an episode of ‘The Colbert Report’. Here’s some of my favorite lines from tonight’s episode: After all, Romney failed, and he won’t go away. You steer it with your balls. Crazier than naming someone Jean Valjean? That means my Princess Diana’s plates really are worth a fortune. There is no God but Alan, and more profits are his prophet. Next, he’ll head up the Department of Homeland Security with Ross

God, schools and television

God, schools and television Read Peter Hitchens only in the Mail on Sunday Various contributors were enthused by Steve Lewis's posting (8th November, 1052 am) on the thread about the Ross-Brand-BBC affair. In fact, Mr Lewis was responding to what I thought was an equally important (but largely neglected) point about the brainwashing power of TV. He argued that religious education of children was comparable to the conformist influence of TV, and then went on to make an attack on religion in

Barbara Lewis - 1965 Baby, I’m Yours - 1968 Workin’ On A Groovy Thing

Barbara Lewis - 1965 - Baby I’m yours Barbara was a less dramatic singer than label mate Aretha Franklin, but she was a top quality soul singer with a wonderful, clear, soprano voice. She had three big American hits, these being “Hello stranger”, “Baby I’m yours” and “Puppy Love”. Barbara Lewis is one of many singers who have largely been forgotten. This early album proves that she had the talent to be a major star. If you enjoy sixties soul music and you want to look beyond the famous nam

Pre-Writing

This past April Rhema had a birthday party. On many of the cards she received, kids from her class had written their names or “Happy Birthday” or some other brief note. As I went through the cards, I felt a growing panic. Rhema can’t write her name. She cannot even imitate a stroke or hold a pencil properly. Oh no. Will she ever learn? Will she ever learn to read and write?? I had forgotten to worry about this. These are the kind of thoughts in which a friend of mine raises her hand (as in a Dia

CES 2009: Diana Ross in Jeopardy?

The future of consumer electronics is so bright, we ought to wear shades... especially at CES 2009 in Las Vegas this January.

Martha Reeves: interview out-takes. (Click here for the main interview feature) Pop music is a fickle business. Musical styles come in and out of fashion, but classic Motown music has gone through a period of sounding dated. Why do you think that is? I feel the same way. It’s because we had classic musicians. Jazz guys; they called them “cats”. The Funk Brothers [backing band on most of the earlier Motown hits] made music that was classic. We had our first recordings with the upright bas

Ickmusic’s Friday Five: November 14, 2008
