Richard Chamberlain

All the youngsters out there don’t know this one, but Richard Chamberlain is celebrating a birthday on March 31th, born in 1935.
He was known for his TV role as Dr. Kildare from 1961-1966. He also appeared in several TV shows and as a guest on talk shows.
His most recent appearance was an episode of Desperate Housewives. He also starred in Shogun in 1980 and my favorite The Thornbirds with Rachel Ward and Barbara Stanwyck in 1983.

THE TOWERING INFERNO (1974) - a giant among disaster movies

THE TOWERING INFERNO(1974, USA)During my Earthquake review, I hinted that The Towering Inferno was the mother of all disaster movies, certainly in the seventies cycle. It was exciting to see this in the cinema in 1975 (the UK got most films about six months later than the US), and it still stands up very well today - not something you can say of all Irwin Allen's movie productions. The non-CGI stuntwork and big-name cast is hard to beat. I’d finally got it on anamorphic widescreen DVD earlier th

Chopped Liver?

In reply to Operation: 1922: This says "staged" all over it. They wouldn't let a flash go off that close to ether, and the patient's abdomen looks a lot like that of a mannequin. The thing in the forceps looks a lot like calves liver from the cafeteria. No clamps to hold the incision open visible, either. [There was no flash, and there is no incision. That's a sponge in the forceps applying iodine or mercurochrome, Dr. Kildare. - Dave]

TODAY'S TWD: CELEBRATING WILLIAM SCHALLERT

Because of that previous piece about the New York Chronicle, and because he's been in the last two episodes of 'True Blood' as the Mayor of Bon Temps, Louisiana, I thought it might be nice to pay tribute to William Schallert. TV Land - back when they really cared about our Television heritage - used to run a bumper celebrating Schallert as the hardest working man in television. And it's nice to tip my hat to the man's contributions to Toobworld before it becomes necessary with a Hat Squad Tribu

IN REMEMBRANCE: 10-12-2008

Jump to Comments CHARLES WRIGHT, NOVELIST     By BRUCE WEBER Published: October 8, 2008   Charles Wright, who wrote three autobiographical novels about black street life in New York City between 1963 and 1973 that seemed to herald the rise of an important literary talent but who vanished into alcoholism and despair and never published another book, died on Oct. 1 in Manhattan. He was 76 and lived in the East Village.   The cause was heart failure, said Jan Hodenfield, one of Mr. Wright’s former

"LIFE ON MARS" (US): WHO ZONKS YA, BABY?

I'm expecting that in order to cement the time and place of the American version of 'Life On Mars' as 1973, there will be plenty of references to the TV shows of that time. (This is something that happens with 'Mad Men' as well, to the point I'm pretty much resigned to the idea I may have to chuck that show into an alternate TV dimension.) The series premiere debuted last night with the episode "Out Here In The Fields" (a song lyric reference to The Who - THANK GOD it's not just known as "Pilot

THE HAT SQUAD: IRENE DAILEY

Irene Dailey, an actress who devoted her life to the theatre and who was the sister of Dan Dailey, has died at the age of 88. She played Nettie Cleary in the 1964 Broadway production of "The Subject Was Roses" (a role which went to Patricia Neal for the movie version). But she was also known for her TV work. Here is an excerpt from Dennis Hevesi's obituary published in the New York Times on October 6th: From 1974 to 1986, and then again from 1988 to 1994, Miss Dailey played Liz Matthews in 'An

West Chester Chili Cook Off - Mission Accomplished

The West Chester Chili Cook Off today was a great success. The crowd was in a great mood too. I'm not sure if the excitement was because they were excited to eat chili or that the Phillies were about to beat the Brewers or because me, Dr Zibbs was in their midst. Those things are almost impossible to measure without expensive machinery. All I know is, I ate over 25 of these mini bowls of chili: .... And now - my awards. The That Blue Yak Gold metal award for best chili goes to Collegium Char

Did Nature misspell postdarwnism postmodernism?

Nature on Altenberg 16 The Darwin establishment is going to fight tooth and nail against any destabilizing influence on the Paradigm, and the slander against efforts to upgrade Darwinian fundamentalism as somehow postmodern is a cheap shot, but one that will resonate with many loyal followers who won’t know better. To make the point clear, there isn’t any connection whatever between postmodernism and efforts to find the way beyond the flaws in the Neo-Darwinian Synthesis. The article makes c

Remembering Dr. Schlenhoff

It’s a tough world; one takes comfort where it lies. For me, mental hugs are found in reminiscence, recalling childhood memories and remembering people who were nice to me. The exercise isn’t hard to do: It isn’t difficult to imagine the faces of kind Mr. and Mrs. Turner, the older couple who lived below the apartment in which my family lived in 1960s Baltimore. Or to catch some trace of the aroma of Sister Francisanne’s simmering Italian meatballs in the kitchen at St. Ambrose’s. Or the swee

The End of Warner Bros. Animation

The last in my series of Warner Bros. animation overviews. I'm still planning to do a proper evaluation series one day. Warner Bros. shut down their cartoon studio in 1953, burning off a backlog of already-made shorts and mulling over the ramifications of 3-D and what role it would play in animation's future. Short answer: none. Exhibitor interest in 3-D was not very high, and theatrical shorts were of less interest than ever to theater chains. Now that the government had ordered film studios t
