Sarah Hughes
Happy birthday to Sarah Hughes born May 2, 1985. Yes, I know who she is. Womens figure skater who won the 2002 gold medal in the Olympics. She hasn’t been competing much that I’ve heard of lately, but she’s going to Yale. Her sister Emily has continued the family tradition in skating.
I like Sarah as I felt she put the NICE back into ice skating.
Around the Horn -- Our Newest Web Friends Edition
Only the newest and freshest links from the left hand column today, okay? First off, we travel to B-Piper.com, a great Billie Piper fansite run by the lovely Mandy. She has a deleted scene from the series four Doctor Who DVD set from the scene in Norway (you know, at the end). It is a great place to keep up with news about Billie, who also stars in Secret Diary of A Call Girl, which returns to US TV screens on Showtime in January. Showtime site at this link. Next, I met British journo and a
Winter Blog Blast Tour, Day Three: M.T. Anderson
The author M.T. Anderson has long been one of our favorites here in the Wonderland treehouse -- perhaps best known for the iconic 2002 YA novel, Feed, or for his hilarious middle-grade book Whales on Stilts! More recently, we've been wowed by The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Volumes 1 and 2. Mr. Anderson is an amazingly accomplished writer; his YA work is stunningly intellectual, amazingly versatile, and--perhaps most important--just plain absorbing to read. We are in awe, and we're so

Mitali Perkins Interview for Winter Blog Blast Tour
Okay, now it’s my turn for an interview in the Winter Blog Blast Tour, and what better way to start than with the amazing Mitali Perkins? In The Not So Star-Spangled Life of Sunita Sen and Monsoon Summer, Mitali brings us characters struggling between cultures — Indian and American. In her book Rickshaw Girl, we enter the world of a strong girl in Bangladesh bending the rules to help her family survive. Her First Daughter books break new ground in blending South Asian issues into the all-America

A painful sight: Hughes, Meissner after the fall(s)
I don’t know which makes me sadder. Watching Kimmie Meissner or watching Emily Hughes. The two 19-year-olds were the Nos. 6 and 7 finishers at the 2006 Olympics, the 1-2 finishers at the 2007 U.S. Championships and remain two of the nicest young women I have met during three decades of covering figure skating. Yet, the way both have skated over the past two seasons makes me wonder how much joy each still can be getting from a sport that seems to be tormenting them. Meissner has changed

EAR Interview: Mieko Shimizu
16 artists are being nurtured by the Southbank Centre as Emerging Artists in Residence in what they're styling an "eclectic hub for music and performance". Keeping you ahead of the curve, we're getting closer to this multi-talented bunch of singer-songwriters, rappers, MCs and beatboxers, spoken word artists and DJs in a series of interviews. Who are you and what do you do? I'm Mieko Shimizu aka Mico. I'm a composer, singer and producer. Apart from my own project, Mico, I am involved with
Interview: Michael Rosen, socialist, author and poet; and the UK's children's poet laureate.
I came across the article below in the Sunday papers, it is an interview with Michael Rosen, socialist, author and poet, who is now the UK's children's poet laureate. That he has been appointed to this position is a surprise to say the least, I suppose one of the reasons is because authors and poets who target their work at children are hardly thick on the ground. None the less I welcome his appointment and not only because Mike is a man of the left, but because he believes passionately
In Paris, women skaters -- and their sport -- continue to lose footing
When she came off the ice after Friday’s short program at the Bompard Trophy Grand Prix event in Paris, Caroline Zhang said, "I stayed vertical." That apparently is all anyone can hope for in women’s figure skating these days. Zhang didn’t skate very well. Neither did any of the other nine women. No surprise there: The sport is simply a combination of ice follies and, when the skaters do stay upright, a relentlessly boring repetition of sloppy execution of the same contortions required b

Speaker’s Conference - launch roundup
A historic and under-reported moment happened last night in the Commons. For the first time in over 30 years, and only the sixth since the 19th Century, a Speaker’s Conference is being established. Such key subjects as women’s right to vote have been looked at in previous ones. This Conference will look at issues to do with diversity in the Commons and how to make Parliament more representative. Formally, the Conference has been asked to: "Consider, and make recommendations for rectifying, t
Speaker’s conference on diversity in Parliament
To the House of Commons last night, to hear Harriett Harman speak to a motion launching a Speaker’s Conference to be held over the next year, and to make recommendations on how the House of Commons could better reflect the British population, particularly with regard to having more MPs who are women, from ethnic minorities and disabled. The 1917-18 Speaker’s Conference finally generated cross-party agreement on votes for women: last night’s highly consensual debate saw all major parties speak
Review Of The Family ~ Wedding Vows
Oh the horror! Last night was the last episode of the Family, but what a lovely one it was! The episode opened with Jane doing some cleaning at the weekend, but Simon wanted to go out. Jane was having none of it, despite the fact that Simon pointed out she was off all week and therefore could clean then. Still, she wasn’t being convinced and pointed out that she was getting root canal work done and shopping for wedding dresses on Monday. Both prospects brought sympathetic groans from Simon.

Promoting Palin with Team Sarah
Since being announced as the vice presidential nominee for the Republican Party, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has brought crowds, by the thousands, to her speeches. But now, she’s bringing them online too — to the Team Sarah network. The network, barely a month old, is a testament to the amazing growth potential of organic, grassroots social networks created by supporters. Created on Sep. 17, this social network supporting Gov. Palin’s candidacy now boasts almost 50,000 members. And with inte
