Pink
MSN Jeannette Walls reports that Pink is being censored on radio programs regarding her views on President Bush.
She’s not allowed to discuss her political views but they are expressed in her song “Dear Mr. President”.
John Travolta
Jeannette Walls also had a story on John Travolta saying he was as big as Elvis and Marilyn Monroe.
I thought he was talking about his weight after seeing the picture that was posted with article. But after reading the article he was talking about his fame, but how well he’s handled it compared to them. He gave credit to religion and values that he hasn’t meet their fate.
I still think my first reaction was closer to home.
Paris Hilton
I found a real shocker in Jeannette Walls gossip column, Paris Hilton is her own biggest fan. NO DUH!
Anyone who has watch TV the last two years knows that Paris loves the camera and any mirror she goes by.
The columnist mentioned that Paris had large portraits of herself all over the room at her birthday party which guest were supposed to write glowing messages to the heiress. I guess her parents should have a parental seminar on “how to raise your child with a positive self image”. I think I’d go to to this one.
The Glass Castle

Flower power
Flower powerThe expression is said to have been coined by the US poet Allen Ginsberg in 1965. 1967 Fashion Hippies spoke readily of "flower power" as many of them got their power from the cannabis flower - as well as wearing flowery garb. Hippie psychedelia reached its peak in 1967, flooding the 'alternative' fashion world with kaftans, afghan coats, body paint and flowers in the hair. This was the year of Scott McKenzie's hit San Francisco (Be sure to wear some flowers in your

Book review: French Milk by Lucy Knisley
As I said in the previous post, Holly Bemiss knows her graphic novels. I was inspired to check out Lucy Knisley's French Milk, and here's what I thought:The Glass Castle author Jeannette Walls once told me that memoir should be universal, and I've kept that in mind ever since when I read them. What I think she meant is that while a memoir is specific to the storyteller in the details, anyone should be able to relate to it, somehow. As I read Lucy Knisley's French Milk, I was struck by her storyt

The quintessential brain looked very much like an opaque, featureless bladder with dim, undulating ghosts of convolutions writhing visibly within . . . Tiers of attendants were busy spraying that great brain with a cooling spray, and patting and sustaining it . . .” —H. G. Wells, The First Men in the Moon Last week, in a pastel

Cindy Sherman, NYC, 1986 | Images courtesy of Clamp Art Gallery Statement These pictures were taken starting in 1982, when I was in my early 20's. Francesco Clemente was the first portrait I took in the series. He became a friend and I also modeled for him. Thomas Ammann, the Swiss art dealer, and Matthias Brunner, his boyfriend, who remains one of my closest friends today (Thomas died of AIDS in 1993), started collecting my portraits. That's how I got to know Bruno Bischofberger. Bru

Best-selling books of the last 15 years
October 31, 2008 I absolutely love lists! S. Krishna posted about USA TODAY’S top 150 best-selling books of the last 15 years, so I had to go through them and figure out how many I’ve read — of course! I’ve bolded everything I’ve checked out. That would be 33. Thirty three out of 150? I guess that’s all right. Check out the original article here! I’m surprised to see so many “recent” books on the list: The Shack, The Last Lecture, Breaking Dawn, Eldest . . . not that they’re not all worthy of
The Glass Castle
The Glass Castleby Jeannette WallsI've said it before and I'll say it again: I am a book snob. I hate to read what "everyone else" is reading, to be "part of the crowd" ... I'm very picky about what I read ... I'm often (internally) critical of what other people choose to read. Shame on me, I know, but at least I'm honest about it. :)When my book club chose The Glass Castle for this month's pick I was not thrilled. I have a rule against reading personal tragedy/childhood abuse memoirs. Add t
What's on YOUR Nightstand? (the Oct. '08 edition)
It's that time again, time for the once-monthly "What''s on your nightstand?" carnival! I love this one for two reasons. First it is only once a month - that's enough for me. And second, it forces me to admit to myself how many books I need to finish. So here we go ...*** On my desk at work ***Why The Wind Blows, by Matthys Levy - I've finished reading it and just need to write my review - stay tuned, it should be up this weekBedlam South, by Mark Grisham and David Donaldson - this is my 're
