Bette Davis/Joan Crawford

The Biography Channel had me hooked this weekend with their features on Bette Davis and Joan Crawford.
I became aware of both of these actresses toward the end of their careers. This is before I had ever heard mention of “Mommy Dearest”. The movies I had seen them in, made them scary and mean to me because of their age.
Watching Biography I was amazed at how pretty Bette Davis was in her youth. I have come to enjoy some of her first great movies like “Jezebel” and “Dark Victory”, also Joan Crawford in “Mildred Pierce”. Both made over 100 movies.

'Vanity' Project

The current issue of H magazine has a nice piece on the history of Vanity Fair portraits, including this heavenly image of a 20-year-old Rob Lowe all but having sex with the camera, shot by Nan Goldin (who's my friend's cousin and does he have stories!). Vanity Fair -- featuring the work of Edward Steichen, Herb Ritts, Mario Testino, David LaChapelle and Annie Leibovitz -- has certainly provided some of the most memorable celebrity photos in recent memory, including Demi Moore pregnant, Demi in

Finalewatch: 'America's Next Top Model'

It's here! It's here! The End of Whitney! And the beginning of, well, probably either Samantha or McKey as the reigning America's Next Top Model. Because not once in eleven cycles has the girl I backed won this thing. Apparently, Tyra sees "real model" in girls that, you know, never model again after this show ends. TyraPost! It's in Dutch, but it's totally "easy, breezy, beautiful." Next to the TyraMail is the girls' sides for their commercial, and the first line is in Dutch, which confuses t

PUTRID!

For his blog, Michael Musto has dug up a clip of Faye Dunaway playing Mae West from a 2002 flick THE CALLING. Her impersonation's not too good and although she does once give you that buck-toothed look which Mae sported in later years due to her face being yanked back so far that her mouth could no longer close, Faye doesn't really sink her teeth into Mae as she did Joan Crawford. For some rotten reason (Faye's reluctance to wear a wig, perhaps?) Faye West isn't even sporting the classic light b

The Sony Pictures Studio Tour

Jump to Comments Last month Mike, from MovieShotsLA, his fiance Jen, and I decided to go on another studio stalking adventure.  This time we opted for the Sony Pictures Studio Tour in Culver City.  The studio lot that is now owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment (parent company to both Columbia and TriStar Pictures) was originally built in 1915 by producer Thomas Ince for his company Triangle Pictures.  During that time, Culver City was quite a powerhouse in the motion picture industry.  The cit

"That Man Begins" (Originally Published, 12.3.07) When it comes to movies, Christian Bale is to relaunches what Kevin Costner is to crap. Over the weekend it was confirmed that Bale will take on the role of reluctant robot killer John Connor in the next installment of the seemingly inexhaustible Terminator series -- Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins. Besides being saddled with a title that calls to mind memories of Remo Williams (whose "Adventure" began and ended simultaneously back in

What's My Line?

WHAT'S MY LINE is the greatest panel game show on TV ever. Sure the two other Goodson-Todman classics were TO TELL THE TRUTH - which had an awesome theme song (and the great Kitty Carlisle) and I'VE GOT A SECRET, which had the future Mrs. Pamela Vorhees (Betsy Palmer) on its panel- but WML?, which ran on CBS in primetime from 1950 through 1967 and in syndication from 1968 to 1975 is the granddaddy of all guessing games. THE MATCH GAME, which I love, is in a different category altogether. Oddly I

Varla Jean Mermon Relaunches Blog

She’s been silent in the blog world for way too long. Today Varla Jean Mermon has finally got her cyber-groove going on, and how! That dazzling diva Varla Jean Mermon relaunched her blog today, inviting all her fans to come drink up her wit and glamor. At a benefit in New Orleans Bryan Batt (above), a New Orleans native and star of the hit TV show Mad Men, immediately recognized Varla was wearing a “not so subtle” copy of Rosalind Russell’s gown from the 1939 cult classic The Women. It’s fr

An Incredible Cure for What Ails Me

I was not a happy camper this weekend. Not only did I have a houseful of teenage boys for the better part of the last two days (The Young One was playing host to a couple of his friends and I was up to my elbows in homemade pizza and monkey bread), the hormones my doctor prescribed for my menopause symptoms were, to put it mildly, a miserable failure.  Not only was TOM over a week late, I was bloated to roughly the size and shape of the Goodyear blimp.  While I appear to be on the downside of

The Angry and Entirely Fictional Hidden Majority

There is this odd video clip – Bill O’Reilly as a guest on Jon Stewart’s Daily show, explaining to a quite skeptical Stewart that America is really a center-right nation, and in January, when Obama becomes president, Obama had better drop all his current policy goals – drop the universal healthcare crap, and all the talk of diplomacy and getting out of Iraq, and vow to keep Guantanamo open, assure America we certainly will torture whoever we capture, and ban gay marriage everywhere, and aborti

US BADMINTON HISTORY

Badminton was invented long ago; its origins date back at least two thousand years to the game of battledore and shuttlecock played in ancient Greece, India, and China. Badminton took its name from Badminton House in Gloucestershire, the home of the Duke of Beaufort, where the sport was played in the last century. By coincidence, Gloucestershire is now the base for the International Badminton Federation (IBF). Badminton has a rich history in the United States. The first badminton clu

Museum after Dark

We arrived long after dusk, having driven amongst the tail lights and twinkling skyscrapers. Ascending in a peculiar elevator of red steel and glass, we stepped out onto a vast concrete plaza where masses of heavy architecture rose into the darkness, box like and un-ornate. Before them a gleaming cluster of chrome chairs sat steely in the incandescent light of a hundred streetlamps {2}. Inside the cold bare foyer of the Ahmanson building, a wide flight of stairs stretched toward a wall of glass,

A-Z: My First Meme

Glenn Kenny at Some Came Running invites me to my first meme. To be honest, I didn’t even know what a meme was until now. Actually, I still don’t know, but any chance to willy-nilly list a bunch of movies is not something I have the discipline to turn down. In turn, I’m supposed to tag five movie bloggers and ask them to do the same. And if I’m able to think of five movie bloggers who won’t respond with a “F**K OFF RIGHT WING FASCIST!! — I’ll do just that. So here, off the top of my head,

YouTube Treasure: Faye Dunaway as Mae West!

YouTube Treasure: Faye Dunaway as Mae West! Posted at November 14th, 2008 11:00am Faye Dunaway did Joan Crawford even better than Crawford herself, but did you know she did Mae West too? I mean played her! In 2002's The Calling (video title: Man of Faith), feisty Faye showed up as the aging sexpot befriended by evangelist Leroy Jenkins in this highly bizarre "true story." Check out the clip and see if you think Faye was powdered and corseted enough to pass muster as vampy Mae. And if the guy

Movies with Sock Appeal That Hate To Heil a Heel: The Warner Bros. ?Homefront Collection? on DVD The Bloodshot Eye November 14th, 2008   The bitter and (thankfully) increasingly irrelevant nattering nabobs of negativism on the far right may claim to disagree, but the election of Barack Obama has renewed a lot of people’s faith in America “as one nation, as one people,” as the president-elect said in his victory speech. So what better time than now to immerse onself in the unabashedly pa
