2008 Oscars
As usual the Oscars chose to place themselves above the common man.
Most of the Oscars were given to movies that the majority of the public hasn’t seen and will never see. (No Country for Old Men).
What happend to “Juno” and “Atonement”?
The only move they made to make themselves commercially acceptable was having Jon Stewart as the host. As always the fashions were beautiful especially everyone in RED this year.
Ben Affleck
I watched the “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart this week and saw the interview with Ben Affleck where he was promoting his new movie “Gone Baby Gone”. The interview came across well and he seems like a nice, reserved guy. He also has an interview with Parade Magazine posted on the Internet. He talks about how the press over-did his relationship with Jennifer Lopez and his hopes for the future.
Vers 1.5R
Vers 1.5R November 20th, 2008 It is not often that we want to snuggle with electronic devices but this one is so cute we can’t help ourselves. The Vers 1.5R is here and it is an iPod dock, alarm clock and AM/FM radio all wrapped up in a cherrywood package. Also in today (and no less snuggly) are two new letterpress prints by Maxwell Loren Holyoke-Hirsch, our buddy who has his first major solo show going on right now at Anno Domini in San Jose. The prints are amazingly detailed, they are up
Christmas… Colbert Style
Christmas… Colbert Style Posted by Ian Spelling on 11/20 at 05:47 PM How do we know the holidays are nearly upon us? Well, they’re already selling holiday crap at my local A&P and I saw the handyman at my local strip mall stringing up decorations the other day. And getting the jump on everyone on TV? That falls to Stephen Colbert—yes, that Stephen Colbert—and his one-hour musical special A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All! The guest list includes Elvis Costello, Feist, Toby Kei
Six Degrees: Odds and ends
I’m not even going to pretend I’ve been keeping up with everything and everyone lately; not only have I been way too swamped for that, you all would know instantly how ludicrous an assertion it was. Nonetheless, there are a few things I thought I’d drop into a post for you all (because there actually *are* one or two things going on in the world aside from the impending broadcast of A Colbert Christmas); please chime in with comments and/or links if you think of anything else your fellow fans
(Long) Quote of the day
Today’s winning post comes from Sarah at season of the bitch. In studying journalism, it’s been pointed out to me several times that women journalists and journalists of color are always presumed to be biased when dealing with issues that relate to their gender or race. White men, by contrast, can be “neutral”–can live up to the famed journalistic goal of being “objective.” Of course, this is crap. Straight, cisgender white men write from a straight, cisgender white man perspective. In the
Video -- More Colbert Christmas: Festival of Lights, Jon Stewart Asks?
Yes, Jon Stewart sings! We know Stephen is a musical theatre pro, but Jon? I have to tell you that I'm impressed, and that comes from a member of the 1978 All New York State High School Choir. LINK And, if you click over to this link at the NY Mag Vulture blog, you can hear what will no doubt be the musical highlight of the special. It swings, baby, it swings! Airing for the first time this Sunday at 10 on Comedy Central. Some proceeds from DVD and iTunes sales from the show go to FeedingA
It’s a very Colbert Christmas
It’s going to be a very merry Christmas. Well, a hilarious one anyway. Stephen Colbert is going the Bing Crosby route this Christmas (hopefully minus the terrible, terrible abuse). He’s going to host “A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All,” set to air at 10 p.m. EST Sunday. It will be released Tuesday on DVD Instead of his traditional talking head suit, the comedian has gone with a cardigan sweater, red turtleneck and furry boots, and from his regular set to a mountain cabin decked fo

HOW DO THEY FIGURE “SEXY”?
Photo: Stewart Shining on People Yesterday People magazine released their annual list of Sexiest Men Alive and named Australia’s Hugh Jackman as the cream of the crop. Amy was quick to point out that the list should correctly be named the Sexiest Male Celebrities Alive, and she’s absolutely right. After perusing the list, I decided that there is less than a handful of 2008’s picks I can agree with. 1. Hugh Jackman 2. Daniel Craig (Ack! He’s blonde!) 3. Jon Hamm (Uhhh…who?) 4. Zac Efron 5.

Bush and other world leaders prepare for a group photo
Notice the absence of handshakes... This unannotated clip during the Jon Stewart credits is a little easier to watch than the CNN version with the snarky comments.

Yule enjoy this 'Colbert Christmas'
More fun this weekend than Jack Bauer's grim world-saving is "A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All" (9 p.m. Sunday, Comedy Central). In this amusing, music-driven holiday special, Stephen Colbert lovingly parodies those Bing Crosby and Perry Como holiday specials of yore. Musical guests Elvis Costello, John Legend and Feist stop by to join in the flag-waving frivolity, and Colbert and Willie Nelson sing an appropriately surreal holiday duet about the aromatic and possibly illegal gif

Some thoughts on objectivity.
As we noted in the comments to my “blogging our bodies” post, the idea that language and the user of language can be neutral is impossible. Queen Emily noted that it is cisgender white men who write with the “objective” voice, that others are always assumed to be Other, to be biased. In studying journalism, it’s been pointed out to me several times that women journalists and journalists of color are always presumed to be biased when dealing with issues that relate to their gender or race. Your PC is Lying, aka John Hodgman’s New Book
Your PC is lying to you. John Hodgman, also known as “PC” in Apple’s catchy “Hello, I’m a Mac” commercials, has published a new book, “More Information Than You Require.” It’s an almanac of facts ranging from the historical to the trivial, except most of the facts are actually absurd fabrications. For example, consider this helpful folk remedy: “If you have lost a finger, numb the pain with a poultice of goose grease and pine needles. Leave the poultice on the finger stump until it becomes
NaBloPoMo Day 20 - Election Withdrawals
Day Twenty. Is it just me? Or do you feel a little bit of letdown, now that the election is over? (Well, over for most - I guess for Al Franken, it will be a while.) Seriously, when all the commercials were popping up on each channel and the yard signs were cluttering yards, I was ready for the election to be HISTORY. But now? Now I'm having DT's. I miss the media coverage the most, I suppose. It was truly insane, and more entertaining than I gave it credit for at the time. Every night, I would

Subtle messaging in the Obama infomercial - did you get it?
A reader points out two interesting tidbits in the Obama half-hour “infomercial” that aired just before the election. I didn’t get either of these, but I wonder if other people noticed them. One was the story of a retired “elderly” couple where the man had to go back to work at the age of 72 (and take a loan on their house) because of his wife’s medical bills (video here). The man complains “I’m 72 years old, and things are changing.” The tidbit is that McCain is 72. Coincidence? The other is
