Kurt Cobain

Forbes.com reported on the “Top-earning dead celebs”. A few of the top were Elvis Presley, Kurt Cobain, Johnny Cash and Bob Marley. Some of the income reported was from sale of various estate items and others from released music.
There were people on the list that I wouldn’t have considered like Dr. Seuss and Albert Einstein, but a different kind of list for sure.

Fetishes

I Fear Your Queer Brutality Fetishes / Ranylt Richildis Nick Broomfield's entire body of work is an underappreciated gem, but his 1996 documentary about a tony S&M parlor can only be discussed in a Twisted Masterpieces retrospective. This one isn't for prudes, and some of you might even hate me for suggesting Fetishes is a great film experience. It isn't pornography, but it is unflinching; there are enough penises and ball sacks on parade, here, and enough breasts, to earn this one a str

Axl Rose Fought With Cobain

Courtney Love Sparked Row In a new magazine article former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic has revealed that Guns 'N' Roses singer Axl Rose fought with Kurt Cobain backstage at the MTV Awards. It has long been rumored that the pair fell out at the 1992 ceremony, but until now Novoselic has been reluctant to talk about the incident. In a new article published in the Seattle Weekly, the musician claimed that the incident started after Courtney Love asked Axl Rose to be the godfather to the couple

This one is the bands 2nd LP, and almost as good, coming out a year after Landshark in 1983. The Band formed in around 1980, and put out a 7" that predates the LPs. I wish I had that one. I sold this LP years ago, When I became disgusted with SammyTown's

Tech 21 CompTortion Guitar Effects Pedal Review

Distortion and compression are twin faces of the same personality. Compression can give a guitar the violin like sustain many players seeks in a good distortion pedal, while distortion can iron out transients in a way similar to a compressor. The marriage of both effects in one pedal would seem a foregone conclusion, but a noise gate would be required to eliminate the resulting noise, and the interaction of all three items adds up to a rather dysfunctional family. You can thank Tech 21 for o

Smells Like Teen Spirit - REMIX

Nirvana Smells like Teen Spirit Smells Like Teen Spirit Music Remix by XarJ DO NOT LISTEN to this remix if you are a HUGE fan of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain and the song Smells Like Teen Spirit! The mixture of instruments and the original song might damage some hears! "It Smells like Teen Spirit" was written by Kurt Cobain, it was the first big success of the Nirvana music group. The song struck the spirits by alternating between moments of quiet and unleashing electricity. This style will mark th

SEVEN FALSE STARTS ABOUT THE DEATH OF DAVID FOSTER WALLACE

Album Review: Chinese Democracy

The last time Guns N’ Roses released an album’s worth of original material, River Phoenix was still acting, Kurt Cobain wasn’t a household name yet, and Jurassic Park was just a novel. Things have changed, to say the least, and while nearly eighteen years have passed since Use Your Illusion I & II, the fan base for the former ’80s outfit is still as strong as ever. Twenty and thirty somethings still wear their faded “GNR” shirts, while teenagers flock to Hot Topic and buy belt buckles, pins

Dimebag Hardware

First let us put to rest everyone screaming about cashing in on Dimebag’s death and legacy. I know I have said something about it in the past but then we would have to say the same thing about people like Kurt Cobain and Jimi Hendrix. The fact is that Rita and Vin are not sitting back and putting money in to this to get it going and gloating in hopes that Dimebag’s death will rake in a boat load of money. It was Dime’s vision and idea. They just brought it to life after his death. He was loved

Yoda, a stormtrooper and an Indian walk into a bar...

Yoda, a stormtrooper and an Indian walk into a bar... November 19, 2008 at 10:46 AM I'd never gone to a costume party for Halloween before this year. I know this is odd, but at least I am familiar with the concept of Halloween, unlike a friend I had in middle school who had lived abroad her whole life. I took her trick-or-treating for the first time in the 90's and she was befuzzled by the concept, asking, "So, we dress up and they're just going to give us candy?" It is sort of weird when you

Overdue Recap: CityBeat Best Of San Diego & Dead Confederate @ Casbah

The day after my anniversary show, my wi-fi quit on me. I planned on writing, but instead had to catch up with real life...like cleaning my house, doing laundry, running errands, job hunting, and realistically, catching up on my shows, being a hermit, listening to music, sorting through e-mail and trying to figure out how I'm so behind on everything when I have so much time on my hands. Oh, and if you're on Twitter, it is so easy, when the wi-fi comes back, to just lose whole chunks of time rea

Nirvana MTV Unplugged was Filmed 15 years Ago Today 11.19.93

On November 19th 1993,  Nirvana records an MTV unplugged concert in New York. The show is shot in one take - imperfections and all - and is aired one month later.  Sadly it was one of the last times Kurt Cobain performed in front of a live audience. The band played 14 songs, 12 of which were aired for MTV: About a Girl Come as You Are Jesus Doesn’t Want Me for a Sunbeam (The Vaselines cover) The Man Who Sold the World (David Bowie cover) Pennyroyal Tea Dumb Polly On a Plain Someth

Mope Like Me: Helen Stellar, “io (This Time Around)”

(With apologies to Ted, as there are no sob stories about failed relationships this week.) Let it not be said that Cameron Crowe’s Elizabethtown was without its good points. Actually, I shouldn’t say that. I never saw the movie – the trailer, lengthy running time, questionable casting of Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst, and ultimately the reviews were enough to scare me away – but the impression I get is that it was not good. Whatever the qualities of his movies, though, Crowe always made sur

Guitar Gods - The Cover Art

Here’s the cover art for one of my latest mixes - a four disc box-set called Guitar Gods. A compilation like this invites furrowed brows, lists of corrections, and plenty of harrumphing from all corners. Strike up the chorus: “But what about ____________?” There were dozens more guitarists that ideally would have been included, but four discs seemed like enough, and the line had to be drawn somewhere. World B. Furr (sometime commenter on this blog) was kind enough to collaborate on this mix wit

Punk Lives On

November 19, 2008 in Aesthetics, The "Art World" | Tags: Punk, Christie's, Joan Anderman For anyone out there with several thousand disposable dollars and a place on the mantel for the Sex Pistols’ first press release - announcing the arrival of four teenagers who hate everything - this is your cultural moment. Three decades after punk exploded in a brief but potent fit of abrasion, alienation, and anarchy, the auction house Christie’s is holding the first major US sale of memorabilia from
