Benjamin Bratt
I was watching one of the “Law and Order” episodes that starred Benjamin Bratt. Then I started wondering where Benjamin Bratt had gone.
He was the “it” guy several years ago when he was dating Julia Roberts. I decided to look him up to see if he’s done anything lately. IMBD did have a consistent list of work for the past few years and it looks like his present project is “Love In the Time of Cholera”.
I’ve been seeing some previews for this movie, but didn’t realize he’s in it.
There Is Almost No Such Thing as Thin Libertarianism
That, in a sentence, is my contribution to the ongoing debate between “thick” and “thin” versions of libertarianism. Here’s why I say what I do. As I understand it, thin libertarianism describes the libertarian project as solely one of defining property rights as precisely as possible, making them pervasive, strong, unencumbered, of clear title, and of easy transferability. To be sure, I agree with all of these aims, and with thin libertarians’ reasons for wanting them. But this is also exactl
Helen Jones-Kelley receives 30 day unpaid suspension
This in from the office of Governor Strickland: Governor Ted Strickland issued the following statement today: “Helen Jones-Kelley has dedicated her life to helping the most vulnerable among us. She is recognized nationally as an expert in the field of foster care and she has worked commendably for many years as an advocate for children, families and workers in her native Montgomery County and the state of Ohio. I value her contributions to the state and her local community. “However, I acc
Elizabeth Lesser On Oprah's Soul Series
Elizabeth Lessor is co-founder of Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY and author of "Broken Open" and "The Seeker's Guide." Omega is a Mecca for Spiritual Seekers all over the world who come there to commune with others on the spiritual path. Everyone there has a commonality: they are seeking community and connection with one another and with the larger whole. When Oprah asked Elizabeth Lesser to define spirituality, she said that it is a state of complete fearlessness, detached from all
Bienvenidos a Florida!
Hola, ladies! I just got into town (Boca Raton, to be exact) and wanted to say a quick hello. Surprisingly, I am still functional enough to type (LOL!) because travel always wears me out. Guess who almost missed her flight this morning. I’ll give you one guess… Note to file: running through airport terminals to catch a flight is SO NOT COOL! But we’re here now, at the hotel in Boca. Jen’s wedding is the day after tomorrow. Don’t let the view from the hotel room balcony deceive you; i

Rubashkin will remain in custody
Despite offering the court $3.75 million for bail, former Agriprocessors chief executive Sholom Rubashkin will remain in federal custody. “After having carefully considered all of the evidence and arguments of counsel, however, the court concludes that [Rubashkin] is a serious risk of flight,” U.S. Magistrate Judge Jon Scoles wrote in the detention order this afternoon. “The government has met its burden by a preponderance of the evidence that there is no condition or combination of conditions
Catholic Church-hating Roseanne Barr Wants Vatican to Control Jerusalem?!
Is comedian, radio talk show host and blogger Roseanne Barr angling for the ambassadorship to Israel? After all, she has a simple solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict: ISRAEL MUST CONCEDE ALL TERRITORY PRE 1967 AND JERUSALEM TOO, TO A THREE WAY SPLIT UNDER INTERNATIONAL AND VATICAN CONTROL IN ORDER TO AVOID WW3!!! But wait a minute. The Vatican is administered by the Roman Catholic Church, of which Barr is decidedly not a fan. Indeed, she considers the Roman church, along with black
Moron of the Week: Kingdom of Heaven
Comic relief time my pro-migrant, pro-queer comrades! This amicus curie brief a MUST-READ for when you are down, depressed or taking a shit (though it is not worth printing out so take the laptop with you…) Some great quotes: “In order to fill the earth with human physical bodies, God ordered each and all marriages to be between a one man and one woman. Indirectly, god prohibits gay and lesbian marriage. Through Genesis 1: 26-27, God also orders that all children must be born from natural co

Napolitano Nomination for Homeland Security--national and Arizona implications
It appears all but certain that the Obama administration will name Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano as chief of Homeland Security. Before getting to what kind of Homeland Security chief she will make or the political implications this has here in Arizona, I'd like to discuss what kind of a Governor Janet Napolitano has been. I actually went to High School at the same school she went to in Albuquerque (just missed being there at the same time) and I've watched her govern Arizona in an extraord
Israeli bulldozer demolishes protest camp
Update: The Israeli bulldozer is now creating a wall surrounding the residents who have remained on the site of the protest tent. The wall that the Israeli forces are creating is on Palestinian owned private land. ———– 9:30 am, East Jerusalem: Israeli forces are again dismantling the protest camp in Sheikh Jarrah, set up after the eviction of the al-Kurd family on the 9th November. A bulldozer arrived at the private property at 8:45am with orders to destroy the tent and the surrounding fen
Keep it Simple: Stop the Foreclosure Crisis with the Right to Rent
Keep it Simple: Stop the Foreclosure Crisis with the Right to Rent Posted by James O'Rourke on November 20, 2008 By Dean Baker, TruthOut.org. Posted November 19, 2008. There are a lot of complicated plans being discussed, but sometimes the simplest solution to a problem is best. Politicians often prefer complex solutions to simple problems. Nowhere is this more apparent than with the long list of complicated and convoluted proposals to address the country’s foreclosure crisis. Millions of
Sexiest men alive, now with scratch-n-sniff
Holy smokes, now this is an idea I can get behind. Seems People Magazine will be experimenting just a bit with their Sexiest Men Alive issue which comes out Friday. They will include what they've dubbed the scratch-and-sniff section which will demonstrate scents that the stars say “makes them feel their sexiest.” Now that's just funny....and yet somehow very tantalizing. Unfortunately none of the country nominees will have a scratch-and-sniff section, which seems silly since it would b
A VERY SPECIAL OFFER FOR TAX PROFESSIONALS
Over the past 35+ years I have developed many specialized forms, schedules and worksheets for use in my 1040 practice.. Some of my “homemade” forms are given to clients to help them provide me with the information I need to properly prepare their returns. Some are used as “memos” to the client’s copy and my office file copy to back-up items reported on the returns. Others are used as attachments to the returns. These forms, schedules and worksheets have proven helpful to me in my practice, and I
Florida Supreme Court Rules Workers’ Compensation Cases - Rue & Ziffra, P.A.
The Florida Supreme Court Rules on Claimants’ Entitlement to Attorney Fee Awards in Workers’ Compensation Cases In October of 2003, the Florida Legislature made significant amendments to the state statute (Chapter 440, section 440.34) governing attorney fee awards in workers’ compensation cases. Specifically, the Legislature deleted reference to consideration of the “reasonable fee” factors formerly provided for in the statute. Reasonableness was determined in accordance with the customary hou
Stacks of dead presidents or flesh and blood companions?
Jason Miller interviewed by Robert Turnbull 11/19/08 Robert Turnbull: I guess I'll start with a rather mundane question. How are you? Jason Miller: I just looked at some horrific photos of extremely sick and emaciated people who suffer from a drug-resistant strain of TB and AIDS, so I'm feeling blessed because I'm relatively healthy and able to employ my personal strengths to carry out my purpose on Earth. RT: What is that you consider your purpose on Earth to be? JM: It's multi-faceted an
Afstan: Not good news
Taliban repeating their old ways: The Taliban are setting up courts and other local-government institutions across southern Afghanistan, challenging U.S. efforts to pacify the country and bolster the authority of the central government in Kabul. Senior American military officials said the Taliban run roughly two dozen law courts in southern Afghanistan, one of the armed Islamist group's main strongholds. Drawing on a fundamentalist interpretation of Islamic law, the courts work to resolve confl
Oh for the pecking pity of PETE.
That contested ballot I posted a pic of earlier? Ha. Only the tip of the ‘tardburg. And it’s not just Franken’s people who are clinically insane, either. Here’s a whole grab-bag of them (via Hot Air), and you can even vote on who you think the ballot is for. My personal favorites: The Franken campaign challenged this Anoka County ballot, arguing that the thumb print on it constitutes a distinguishing mark. If a voter signs a ballot or writes his Social Security Number on it, that ballot is i
