Sarah Hughes

Happy birthday to Sarah Hughes born May 2, 1985. Yes, I know who she is. Womens figure skater who won the 2002 gold medal in the Olympics. She hasn’t been competing much that I’ve heard of lately, but she’s going to Yale. Her sister Emily has continued the family tradition [...]

Bush Will Be Remembered for His Rule of Law, Sense of Justice, and Clemency (for Turkeys)

On Thanksgiving, The Dallas Cowboys beat the Seattle Seahawks 34 to 9. And the day before, when Bush spared two innocent lives, he achieved his own victory of 16 to 1. When Bush pardoned Pumpkin AND Pecan, who were about to meet the same fate as the turkeys televised behind Sarah Palin, he could boast of having 16 presidential poultry pardons under his belt. But Bush has also compassionately conserved human life, once. During his six-year governorship and eight-year presidency, Bush has pardone

ON THIS THANKSGIVING DAY

Jump to Comments Our Father in Heaven, and Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,   I come before you this day to give thanks to you for all that you have given me in this life. I thank you for the many people, known, and unknown, who have so profoundly touched my life in so many enriching ways:   I thank you for the many people who have made America a place worth living in. I thank you for all those who devoted their lives in the struggle for freedom, and who stood up for justice, fairness, and rig

My Big Fat 2008 Turkey of the Year

The word "Thanksgiving" has many meanings. In historical context, the Pilgrims gave thanks for their new home, free of the religious persecution they escaped in Europe. In modern times, it means food. Lots of it. And family get-togethers. And football. And turkey. Lots of turkey. Here,we're serving up the turkey as well, celebrating the second annual "2008 Turkey Of The Year," devoted to the year's masters of media buffoonery. And what a year it was! Of course, it was all about the election this

TRAVELLING, CHISEL IN HAND…

First, an apology to those who commented on my last post, on 10th November. Sorry I didn’t respond. My excuse – and it’s a good one, I reckon – is that I was on my way to Egypt at the time and didn’t have access to the internet.Which brings me to the subject of this post. Any one who has visited Pompeii will know that graffiti is everywhere. It’s not just a modern thing. One of the things I learned on my Nile trip was that 19th century travellers all seemed to journey with a chisel in their pocke

Sarah Vaughan: 1958 and 1964

"The records don't do 'em justice," is a line I hear frequently from musicians today who had the privilege of playing with jazz greats from the 1940s and 1950s. The point being that what you hear on LP and CD is nothing compared to having seen or played with those artists back then. For the longest time, whenever I'd hear that line, I'd assume it was coming from someone who was cranky about today's music scene or hyping a fond memory. After all, how much of a difference could there be between

OBAMA OBSERVATIONS, HOPE AND INSIGHT FROM ABROAD

By Eric K. Williams Melbourne, Australia—The whole world was watching as the returns came in on election night and, once it was announced that Illinois Senator Barack Obama had won the hard fought contest in the U.S. Presidential election race, cheers went up from Chicago's Lincoln Park, to the streets of Harlem, in New York and, beyond. I was in New York and among those who rushed up to be a part of the celebrations on 125th Street, symbolically Black America's Main Street that night. History

Few gems amid Guns N’ Roses’ bloated ‘Chinese Democracy’

• Guns N’ Roses, Chinese Democracy –- The good news –- apart, I suppose, from the fact that this quasi-mythological Axl Rose album is finally on sale (albeit exclusively at Best Buy) –- is that despite a handful of spotty live performances lately, during the lengthy run-up to this beast’s release, hair-metal’s Howard Hughes actually sounds like himself. That is, his unmistakable nasal wail, that octaves-apart menace no one does so well and those ear-splitting, blood-curdling high notes we came

More ‘Eli’ news and old promoshoot

Two additions today, and first another small note about ‘The Book Of Eli’ which we told you about a few days ago, this really looks like it’s gonna be a great movie! The Book Of Eli just got a little sexier. Well, ok, a LOT sexier, with news that the awesome Mila Kunis has signed on to join the Denzel Washington action movie. In case you haven’t been paying attention lately, a quick reminder: the movie, the first to be directed by the Hughes Brothers, Albert and Allen, since From Hell, will s

The Forgotten Books-April to December

Happy Christmas Shopping!!!I am thankful for all the people who said yes when I asked them to talk about a book they loved but time forgot. And for all those who said yes more than once. And for those who said yes almost every week. If you haven't added your title to the list, chime in now. We want to hear about that book. (aa2579@wayne.edu)P.S. Despite the appearance, there are no links here. For the original reviews, check the archives for Friday's Forgotten Books on the left bottom or check

Mila Kunis Opens Denzel's 'Book of Eli'

Her career rolling along quite nicely these days, That 70s Show alum Mila Kunis may have just inked her most high-profile movie gig yet. The Hollywood Reporter says Kunis will co-star with Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman in The Book of Eli, a new thrilla that will probably be a lot like the rest of Denzel's medium-budget action flicks, only set slightly in the future. He plays a man trying to protect a book that may hold the key to saving civilization. Let's hope it's not The Secret.

Dallas: November 22, 1963

I look at life in a rather odd way.   Perhaps you view it as I do. I consider anything that happened after my birthday in late April 1959 to be (as they say) “Modern Times”.    That stands to reason; my life began that day. But I also consider two other dates to be seminal; to be obvious points of reference in my life and that of humanity, really.  I see September 11, 2001 and think everything changed after that day. I also look at November 22, 1963 and in a sense, I feel the same way.  Life b

Command P

This ad by Ignited for LA Weekly puts blue space to good use. It also reminds us of a fundamental truth. Be that as it may, I asked Sarah Hughes, the copywriter on the campaign, if it wasn't a bit odd to use a "computer speak" to relay the brand's pro-print message. "One of the main arguments that print is dying is that it’s being replaced by the internet and other digital technologies," she said. "By using 'command P' as one of our executions, we were trying to communicate that print and techn

Moving on from Max Payne, Mila Kunis has joined the cast of action thriller The Book of Eli, which is in development at Warner Bros., Silver Pictures and Alcon Entertainment. She will play Solara, who is at first enlisted to betray the titular character, but ultimately joins him in his quest. The movie will have Eli, the lone hero, fight his way across the wasteland of a near-future America to protect a sacred book that might hold the key to saving the future of humanity in a post-apocalyptic

Looks like we are in for a treat as Mila has apparantly signed up to be in ‘The Book of Eli’ alongside one of Hollywood’s greatest Denzel Washington. Hopefully we will find out a lot more about this movie soon. “That ’70s Show” veteran Mila Kunis, fresh from her breakout feature role in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” has joined the cast of the Denzel Washington action thriller “The Book of Eli”.
