Two Oscar Front-runners Accused of Lying in Magazine Profiles
Over the weekend, in splashy magazine profiles, two surefire contenders for this year's lead acting Oscars subtly made their cases for why it makes sense to give them statues next February: Doubt's Meryl Streep, in the pages of EW, because, thanks to the worldwide success of Mamma Mia!, she's suddenly a bankable movie star (instead of just a terminal Academy baiter); and The Wrestler's Mickey Rourke, in Sunday's Times Magazine, because he's overcome decades of bad decision-making (plus whateve
Chargers
Hot Not Comprehend Diatribe Text SAN DIEGO – A blast from the not-too-distant past came barreling through the home team’s defensive front and into the secondary. By the time Michael Turner had been tackled for the 31st time Sunday at Qualcomm Stadium, the San Diego Chargers’ season was history. Boos showered the half-filled stadium as Turner’s 14-yard gain allowed the visiting Atlanta Falcons to close out a 22-16 victory. It was an outcome that, once and for all, disabused the f
Deep but Not Narrow
Deep but Not Narrow By The Bagger Cinematical has a graceful, smart take on “Milk,” a graceful, smart movie that manages to wiggle out of the cause flick genre and into something far more universal, with much of the credit going to Sean Penn, but plenty left over for Gus Van Sant, who remembers that it’s okay for movies about serious matters to be fun to watch as well. Milk is adult and intelligent in ways many films are not, and it’s rousing and enthralling in a way few films are. It’s a

Madonna and Alex Rodriguez Head to Mexico City
For two people who are trying to deny a romance, these two have been repeatedly spotted together over the past week. This time singer Madonna and Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez were seen in Mexico City. The rumors about Madonna and A-Rod spending Thanksgiving together were half true. They did end up spending time together in Miami after Alex met his family obligations and had dinner with his ex-wife and young children. The Associated Press said that when Alex was asked what he thoug
How Do We Feel About Biopics?
Ali Karim reading. We saw MILK last week and I loved it. Thought Sean Penn did an incredible job of bringing the sweetness and earnestness that was Harvey Milk alive. All the supporting roles were filled well, especially the amazing Josh Brolin as Dan White. They did a great job of integrating newsreels with new footage. I laughed; I cried. You can imagine my dismay when neither my husband nor daughter much liked the film. Their principle complaint was that it was a typical biopic that refused to

55-Minute Milk Interview on Charlie Rose
If you’ve been reading /Film for a while, than you know that I love long form interviews. Unfortunately, the surge of online press has changed the entire press tour landscape. Its all roundtables or short 10-15 minute one-on-ones. I’m so happy that there are still shows out there like NPR’s Fresh Air and David Poland’s DP30 that offer an arena for an in-depth conversation. Charlie Rose had a one hour episode dedicated to Gus Van Sant’s Milk. Thankfully, Rose puts all of his interviews on Goo

Kenny Florian: BJ Penn is ‘human’ and ‘can be beaten’
Props: Boston Herald Quoteworthy: “With B.J., you have to keep him motivated. Hopefully after that performance he does see me as a threat and sees it as a potential great fight. I wanted to let him know that I was there and that’s how I feel about him…. I know I have a lot to learn and a lot to still improve upon, but at the end of the day, B.J. Penn is human. If he’s human, that means he can be beaten and, with the trainers that I have, I feel that anyone can be beat. I know that I’ll figu
Jeff Spicoli ain't no dope
"Conversations With Chávez and Castro"--Sean Penn, (The Nation)with video (03:44):Soon to be Vice President-elect Joe Biden was rallying the troops: "We can no longer be energy dependent on Saudi Arabia or a Venezuelan dictator." Well, I know what Saudi Arabia is. But having been to Venezuela in 2006, touring slums, mixing with the wealthy opposition and spending days and hours at its president's side, I wondered, without wondering, to whom Senator Biden was referring. Hugo Chávez Frías is the d
