Fat To Fatter

Few days after Shogun, went to Jogoya again. This is terrible, really terrible. I was fat, and i am now getting fatter. Whoever seen me these few days can deny that i’m not getting fatter? I just can’t stop myself from eating. Damn, i need to control. Someday, which i will never know when. Just someday.. Well, Jogoya is another good japanese buffet [...]

You Summoned Us

The uber-talented Erwin Haya just challenged me to post seven random facts about myself, and pass it on to seven more folks. I usually don’t do this sort of thing, but Erwin is a cool fella, so I’m doing it. Look out. 01. I spent most of my High School years without proper plumbing and electricity. I read a lot, and ran through the woods with an axe and no shirt on. But nobody noticed. 02. I had an imaginary friend for a time when I was little, but for the life of me, I can’t remember his nam

THE GREATEST MOVIE POSTERS EVER: LIGHTNING SWORDS OF DEATH (1974)

Turning up on these shores some six years before SHOGUN ASSASSIN, this was the third of the generally excellent and bloody-as-a-motherfucker LONE WOLF AND CUB samurai flicks, and the movie is every bit as entertaining as the one-sheet. Coming out during the height of the 1970's chopsocky craze, LIGHTNING SWORDS OF DEATH has nothing to do with kung fu (despite what the poster claims) but has everything to do with kicking major ass, as seen in the incredible sequence where former imperial executio

UFC 93 Video: Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua Training For Mark 'The Hammer' Coleman (Video)

UFC 93 Video: Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua Training For Mark 'The Hammer' Coleman (Video) The former PrideFC middleweight grand prix champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua is back in training after a rough 2008 filled with injuries. Shogun last fought in September of 2007 against current UFC light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin. In a disappointing debut performance for the Brazilian, Shogun was defeated by Griffin via a rear-naked choke submission in the third round. Since then, he was forced to un

Faith McDonnell reports for the Institute on Religion and Democracy on the first beatification ceremony to ever take place in Japan. It happened just a couple of days ago on November 24th. Cardinal Jose Saraiva Martins conducted the ceremony, honoring 188 of the Christian martyrs who were killed between 1603 and 1639. The beatification is linked to sentiments expressed by Pope John Paul II during his visit to Japan in 1981. "Deeply moved by the faith of the Japanese Catholics, and by the legacy

Fedor Learns From Sambo Loss, Cancels Press Tour To Train For Arlovski

More Affliction Banned photos at Sherdog.com When Fedor Emelianenko lost his Sambo match earlier this month at the World Combat Sambo Championships it was quite the shock. The man never loses in Sambo, hell, he never loses in anything. So while the Sambo loss isn’t the end of the world or indicative of where he stands amongst the world’s top mixed martial artists, it was cause for concern that perhaps what he was doing outside of the ring was catching up to what he was doing inside of it. W

The Slow Art of Tea

Photograph by Jennifer Causey In some circles, I’m known as the “Tea Lady”, and this cutesy moniker is all my fault.  I drink copious amounts of tea, both steaming and iced. I’ve stashed at least forty varieties of tea in my pantry (no kidding). I write about tea ad nauseam on my blog, as if what I’m drinking is late-breaking news. When I mail a card to a friend, I feel compelled to insert a tea bag in the envelope. I do love and drink coffee, but seeing as it’s quite a jolt to my genetic cons

Sokoudjou Let Go By The UFC

If Sokoudjou still wants to fight Shogun Rua, he’s going to have a much harder time making that fight happen now. According to Five Oz., Sok has been released by the UFC. Light heavyweight competitor Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou can be added to the list of fighters recently released by the Ultimate Fighting Championship. FiveOuncesOfPain.com first became aware of Sokoudjou having been dropped from the UFC roster last week but could not find a second source for verification. However, published rep

Jeremy Horn vs Rousimar Palhares UFC 93 fight possible for Dublin

Brazilian jiu-jitsu submission specialist Rousimar Palhares (8-2) and mixed martial arts journeyman Jeremy Horn (80-18-5) are expected to collide in a 185-pound tilt at UFC 93 at The O2 in Dublin, Ireland, on January 17, according to a report confirmed by InTheGuard.tv. The up-and-coming Palhares recently dropped a unanimous decision to Dan Henderson at UFC 88: “Breakthrough” on September 6. Once again, however, he demonstrated just how dangerous he can be on the ground — Henderson did every

Stuff

Planned to go Shogun but too bad that the dinner section will only open at 6pm. So donuts become appetizers before the feast at Shogun. J.Co always my favourite (compared to Big Apple). Little appetizers before the proper one. Hanging around at Pyramid. Noted some items in shopping list as mega sale is coming in few days. 2009’s Christmas theme of [...]

Shogun vs Lil Nog

Mauricio Shogun Rua vs Antonio Rogerio Nogueria at PRIDE Critical Countdown 2005. Shogun went on to win the fight and the 2005 Pride Middleweight Grand Prix, defeating Quinton Jackson, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Alistair Overeem, and Ricardo Arona (the last two in one night). Just thought I’d remind everyone that while Rua currently rides our potential wash-out list, it wasn’t always this way. Picture from Susumu

News Briefs

Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction) has signed on to play Sho’nuff in a remake of Berry Gordy’s 1985 cult classic, The Last Dragon, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The plot focuses on a Bruce Lee-obsessed martial-arts student who masters the power of “the glow” and faces off with the neighborhood heavy. As originally played by the late Julius Carry, Sho’nuff, aka the Shogun of Harlem, goes around shouting, “Am I the baddest mofo lowdown around this town?” To which his henchmen reply: “Sho’nuf

Shocker: Shogun training!

Here’s a video care of MMA Mania showing Mauricio Shogun Rua practicing some mitt work. Perhaps it will bring some happiness to you just seeing him in the ring training  … considering the shape he turned up last time he fought, I kinda wondered if he did any any of that annoying ‘work’ stuff at all. You know those dreams where you have something important happening in a month but in the dream it’s happening RIGHT NOW? And you’re shitting bricks because you obviously aren’t anywhere close to

Guest Blog: Trivium Frontman Matt Heafy Says Put Down That Bottle And Pick Up a City Map

“Touring the world sucks… the food outside of the USA sucks… people overseas suck…” That’s all I ever used to hear from bands before I had the opportunity to tour outside of the United States. When I started touring outside of North America I thought I would really miss the comforts of our home culture. Couple that with the fact that the touring life sometimes sucks you down into the deep, dark vortex of sitting in the bus all afternoon, lounging in the dressing room all day, playing on the

Shogun Rua Preparing For UFC 93 Clash With Coleman

It looks like Shogun is working hard to get in top shape for his UFC 93 fight against Mark Coleman. Here’s to hoping the old Shogun shows up on Jan. 17. No one wants to see the Shogun from UFC 76 again. Props to MMA Mania for the find

Mauricio Shogun Rua video training for Mark Coleman UFC 93 fight

Good to see him back in good health: … or not if this is indeed old footage as some suggest.

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua: Training Video

Shogun Rua was expected to take the UFC by storm but it hasn’t worked out that way for him. He lost to Forrest Griffin in a fight that was supposed to make him a UFC star. But he’s on the comeback trail and this video shows him working his stand up game. Editor’s Note: I was checking out YouTube today when I came across this video and mistakenly thought it was relatively new footage–because this particular video was uploaded just today. Turns out that they reused training footage from 2006.
