Steve Martin
Happy Birthday to Steve Martin noted funny man born on Aug. 14, 1945 in Waco, TX. I didn’t realize he was a fellow Texan. For my generation he is best know for his Saturday Night Live skits, “King Tut” song, and “The Jerk”.
Most recently younger audiences know him for “Cheaper [...]

Scorsese’s ‘Empire’ Takes Shape
Steve Buscemi might be starring in “Boardwalk Empire,” Martin Scorsese’s drama pilot for HBO. Kelly Macdonald might star as well. Both are in talks to sign the contract. So far, the deals are looking good. “Empire,” written by Terrence Winter and to be directed by Scorsese, is based on Nelson Johnson’s book, which chronicles the 1920s origins of Atlantic City, N.J. Buscemi would play Nucky Johnson, a crafty businessman who operates a liquor distribution ring at the onset of Prohibition. The
Why Fayetteville Rules: George’s Majestic Lounge
Over the last 5 years, we’ve seen a lot of changes in the Fayetteville music scene. We lost a couple of our favorite venues when Chester’s and JR’s Lightbulb Club shut down / stopped doing live music. The Green Door also closed recently, as did the Dart Room (now the new Gypsy ) Despite all that change, one local venue has remained constantly dedicated to live music in Fayetteville: George’s Majestic Lounge on Dickson Street. We did a poll about six months ago and George’s was the unquesti
List ‘Em Carefully: The Top “Let’s Get Physical” Albums
The end of November. The weeks before Hannukah (or Christmas). The days when the cold air feels exciting, rather than daunting, though at times they can feel both, really. It’s around this time of the year when everyone’s shopping schedule or dinner roasts take priority over other things like reading, office work, or most importantly, working out. As we’re shoving cartfuls of turkey down our gullet or asking for seconds on pumpkin pie, our bodies are just being slaughtered. What’s worse is that

Christmas Mix - Songs:Illinois Style
Well I did it. I waited `til after Thanksgiving to post my Christmas mix. So far a lot of these songs are from last year (or years past), hell I even recycled the photo from last year’s post. I’ll do my best to update this mix as new songs appear. I love these songs. They are some of the best Christmas songs you’re likely to hear and for a large part they are ones I’ve dug up first. So Enjoy and Merry Christmas (three weeks early). P.S. I’m so low tech it’s not even funny so if someone wants
Steve Buscemi and Martin Scorsese to Hit Atlantic City, Possibly Save HBO
"Pretty Boy" Buscemi: Steve Buscemi is in talks to star in Martin Scorsese's HBO pilot Boardwalk Empire. Written by Terrence Winter, the pilot is based on a book chronicling the origins of Atlantic City. Buscemi would play Nucky Johnson, a sly twenties businessman who runs a liquor-distribution ring during Prohibition. Kelly Macdonald is in talks to play Margaret, an Irish immigrant who married the wrong guy to get out of her parents' house. But it's the casting of the raspy-voiced, twenties-s

The Washington Note's Holiday Book List
I'm going to make a list of books here -- some out recently -- and some others that I think are just great reads for people to consider picking up over the holidays. I'm going to make this an ongoing list as I get so many requests from people for books to read. So this will start a core list, and I'll add over time. I'm going to first suggest America and the World: Conversations on the Future of American Foreign Policy with Zbigniew Brzezinski, Brent Scowcroft and David Ignatius. This book
British Independent Film Awards honour Slumdog Millionaire
SLUMDOG Millionaire, a film set in the Indian city of Mumbai, has won the top prize at the British Independent Film Awards (2008). In receiving the accolade, Danny Boyle, who was also named best director, paid tribute to the “big heart” of the city, adding: “[It’s weird to win this at the end of what’s been a terrible week.” Based on Vikas Swarup’s best selling novel, Q&A, the film tells the story of Jamal Malik, an 18-year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience t
Be Careful When Hiring Article Submission Services For Your Articles!
Be Careful When Hiring Article Submission Services For Your Articles! Author Martin Lemieux explains: With the great shift of companies submitting articles online for self-promotion, comes a great opportunity for those who can offer services to speed up this process. In the past SEO companies never thought that one day they would be able to add a new service to their repertoire. Article submission online is a big booming business, but the problem when hiring someone to submit articles for you

Sci-Fi Book Releases for December
Where has the year gone? December already and 2009 is knocking on the door. Ah well, at least there's Christmas before hand - which basically mean two weeks off - woo hoo! Still, another month and more book releases. Gollancz are continuing with their re-releases (in a larger than normal mass market format) with Alastair Reynolds' back catalog. I'll recommend Pushing Ice and Galactic North from those as they are very enjoyable - I'll be investing in most of the rest at some point int he future
Holiday sales up from last year
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — Stores and online merchants were busier this weekend than they were a year ago, according to figures out Sunday, but signs persist that holiday shopping will suffer in the weakest economic climate in decades. The National Retail Federation (NRF), an industry trade group, said shoppers spent $41 billion in the 4-day Thanksgiving weekend. The average shopper spent $372.57, up 7.2% from the $347.55 spent last year. "Pent-up demand on electronics and clothing, plus unpa
OSCAR BRIEF: Many Predicting Oscar Will Go Slumming
Over the weekend Slumdog Millionaire won big at the British Independent Film Awards as Danny Boyle took home director kudos, Dev Patel won for most promising newcomer and the film itself won best independent film. Of course, many are reporting the news as if this is just the start of something big as buzz around the little film has gotten louder and louder over the course of the previous week. I reviewed it and gave it a well-earned “A-”, but when it comes down to awards I can’t see this flic

Gay adoption: The real agenda
Steve Chapman November 30, 2008 On Nov. 4, Arkansas voters approved a ban on adoption by unmarried couples. The purpose of the ballot measure, according to the Family Council Action Committee, was “to blunt a homosexual agenda that’s at work in other states and that will be at work in Arkansas unless we are proactive about doing something about it.” On Nov. 25, a court in Florida pointed out something that the Family Council Action Committee and other anti-gay groups somehow manage to ove
