Rich young stars
Forbes list of the richest young stars had some usuals on the list: Lindsay Lohan and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.
Then there were a few I didn’t think of or expect such as Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter fame and Dakota Fanning of War of the Worlds and I Am Sam.
Also, [...]
Terror and the Political Space of Southasia
A year ago in hearing of the assassination of Benazir Bhutto my heart sank as I thought our region was at boiling point. Over the last week as I heard news of the brutal attacks in Mumbai my heart sinks further as I mourn not only for Mumbai but for our region. I want to begin with Southasia, borrowing from Himal Southasian. Himal claims it wants to “restore some of the historical unity of our common living space - without wishing any violence on the existing nation states”. I want to go f
Toward a New Economic Order
Thomas H. Greco Recent months have seen what is being called “the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.” The pundits have had plenty to write and talk about as they interview officials, consult with “experts,” and speculate about causes. Many point to regulatory failures and flawed policies, but virtually none shine the light upon the flawed structures that make up today’s global system of money and banking. Is that system out of control and about to breathe its last, or is i
Sci-Fi Book Releases for December
Where has the year gone? December already and 2009 is knocking on the door. Ah well, at least there's Christmas before hand - which basically mean two weeks off - woo hoo! Still, another month and more book releases. Gollancz are continuing with their re-releases (in a larger than normal mass market format) with Alastair Reynolds' back catalog. I'll recommend Pushing Ice and Galactic North from those as they are very enjoyable - I'll be investing in most of the rest at some point int he future
Answering the Call: X-Factor
November 30, 2008 Continuing with the introduction of nifty little head icons, Aaron “Onyxweapon” Mead has decided he wants to get in touch with his dark side… going forward, you can expect Aaron’s posts to feature Darkseid’s ugly mug. This week we started a series of challenges, seeing what Aaron can come up with that reeks of niftiness for the new affiliations from Marvel Evolution. This week, X-Factor. Okay first thing? I hate kidney stones. So, I apologize for the lateness of this. At fi
Mythical Monsters
Jump to Comments This post is part of a mythology synchroblog on mythical monsters and otherworldly entities. As a Christian I’ll be concentrating mainly on Christian mythology in this post. First, it seems to be necessary to define “mythical monsters” and “otherworldly entities”. What is “myth”? As the Orthodox philosopher, Nicolas Berdyaev, once put it: Myth is a reality immeasurably greater than concept. It is high time that we stopped identifying myth with invention, with the illusions of pr
Privilege and stories
I met a friend this weekend whom I’d never met before, though we had been reading each other’s stories for years. It was interesting to meet her, and towards the end of the meeting - when we were both too tired (at least, I was) for this to go anywhere interesting, I was thinking about privilege and the history of cities: we were in London, which is a stranger city to both of us. When I take the Underground in London, especially the Northern Line, which is one of the deepest lines, I think
Alive & Blogging (& Ranting)
First, a quick update: Thank you to those of you who left comments regarding the layout on the other site, especially those of you, like greenconsciousness, who commented on the ability to leave comments. (heh) I have adjusted the comment settings here, so you should be able to leave comments now without signing up for a wordpress account. Users will still have to have a comment approved previously before future comments will show up. Sorry about that, but I have trolls and at least one stalker
Newport Beach Activist Allan Beek on Over-Population
My good friend and colleague, Newport Beach maverick activist Allan Beek, recently gave this talk to the League of Women Voters, on an issue dear to his heart: OVERPOPULATION Those of you who dabble in psychology have heard the parable of the fancy formal party where an elephant walks through the parlor, and NOBODY SAYS ANYTHING ABOUT IT. Overpopulation is just like that elephant. Did you see Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth? He told us about all the damage our excessive numbers are causing, bu
Got a call from an old friend…
November 30, 2008 Looks like I spoke not a moment too soon - already, Lost Hemisphere’s newest resident has an article for your perusal! Please join me in welcoming KaleeshWarrior to Lost Hemisphere. With our family expanding, it’s my intention to post an icon in each post to let you know just who’s responsible for the dribble you’re wading through. For myself, I’m returning to my roots and adopting Stilt-Man’s majestic mug. Kaleesh, naturally, bears the proud and noble visage of a Kaleesh… we

Prophetic Signs that we are in the End Times
You would never find me in a church because I find what most people consider to be religion or christian is truly perverted and corrupt, because they do not know the Bible since they don't read it. I do believe the Bible is God's word. The Bible gives many examples of signs that should warn us of the coming end of the age. Six such signs are given by Jesus, two characteristics are given by Paul, and eleven other occurrences are given by the prophets to occur prior to or soon after the end of
Capt. Kirk vs. Klaus Nomi
Capt. Kirk vs. Klaus Nomi On this, the eve of this blog’s Month of Feminism, let us pause for a moment to honor a manly man, James Tiberius Kirk, and a self-consciously girly man, Klaus Nomi. There’s a marvelous and unexpected moment in the new trailer for next year’s J.J. Abrams Star Trek relaunch film when we hear a figure identify himself as “James Tiberius Kirk,” and between that and the urgent-looking action montage that follows — complete with the classic Red Alert Noise and shots of
Field Trip: Dickens Fair
Every Christmas season we go to the Dickens Fair in San Francisco. It's a huge recreation of Victorian London, complete with characters from Dickens novels recreating scenes from the books everywhere you turn. Here is Charles Dickens himself. I asked him if I could use my modern photography machine to take his picture with my kids, and he asked if his son could be in the picture as well. Please ignore the anachronistic exit sign in the background. Marley's ghost mingled about everywhere, invis
Considering AC
Many years ago I started reading Asimov stories, the stories written by him have some of the most inspiring ideas. He is attributed with so many innovations which initially appeared in his stories and then were made real by engineers in many places. An example of his extraordinary work includes the pocket calculator which appeared briefly in a story and was realised as a device not long after. To read this blog post further I suggest reading “The last question“, as it highlights the subject in
Plans to partition Pakistan 'on schedule', compliments of Mumbai incident: The cost of creating the map of the 'New Middle East'
How to Start a Civil War: Last year we learned that the United States was planning to start a Civil War in Pakistan when new classified American military documents revealed that the United States government was intensifying efforts “to enlist tribal leaders in the frontier areas of Pakistan in the fight against Al Qaeda and the Taliban, as part of a broader effort to bolster Pakistani forces against an expanding militancy.” “If adopted, the proposal would join elements of a shift in strate
Where Crescent Rolls Come From
I hate to push Vmax’s post down with this because his post is much better, more important and took more time than this POS. So when you’re done watching this, go read Vmax’s post and then leave him a comment telling him what you want him to give you for Christmas. I’m sure this is old but I hadn’t seen it before yesterday. If you’re a total loser with nothing to live for and really low self-esteem because you know everyone in the world hates your guts, you can go ahead and leave a comment that
Virtual Blog Tour: Interview with Women’s Fiction/Chick Lit Author J.L. Miles
J.L. Miles (Jackie Lee), a resident of Georgia for over thirty years, hails from Wisconsin via South Dakota. She considers herself “a northern girl with a southern heart”. Her paternal grandfather was christened Grant Lee by her great-grandmother in honor of the many fallen soldiers on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Line. Ms. Miles is a former D.I.A.L. Systems Engineer for Baker/Audio Telecom, one of the premier forerunners of voice mail. In addition to systems application, she provided voice t
Cosmoline and the common man
Cosmoline is a grease best known for the use and preservation of firearms by the military, but also serves in many other industries including the automotive and aircraft industries. It was swabbed in as a lubricant to the big guns of battleships and was a grease that tended to just get everywhere as a little bit of sunlight would slowly soften it and a hot deck would melt it. Thus it has a melting point like paraffin wax, but has a much slicker consistency due to other, smaller, hydrocarbon ch
Reduced to a Cinder, a Hostile World Smolders with Vengeance
Greg Bear calls George Zebrowski “one of those rare speculators who bases his dreams on science as well as inspiration.” Zebrowski has published more than seventy works of short fiction and more than a hundred and forty articles and essays in every major fantasy and science fiction publication. E-Reads carries a number of his books, and we're happy to say that some of his most visionary works are in production. We'll be announcing them soon. Until we do, The Omega Point Trilogy will keep you wel
St Stalin?
Jump to Comments A Russian priest has caused controversy by putting up an ikon depicting the Bolshevik dictator Stalin (hat-tip to Fr Milovan in Again and again): One of the most widely covered stories in the Russian Federation this week concerns not the actions of President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin or even the impact of the economic crisis but rather the decision of a priest to put up an icon portraying Stalin and the efforts of some to canonize him. The priest of St. O
